Learning Post- Mother’s Day meal- Lobster and steak

The first meal that I made was for my mother, for her meal I made her favorite meal which was lobster tails, steaks, and boiled red potatoes. My dad helped me immensely as he has been cooking for a very long time and has cooked this meal for many years. In the morning both him and I went to Cosco to grab the steaks and the lobster tails. We also made sure that we had the rest of the ingredients already at our house. We looked off of an online recipe as well so that he could teach me how to read different recipes for my personal learning. For the lobster tail, we used a recipe off of https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/34638/broiled-lobster-tails/. It provided me with basic directions on how to properly cook the two lobster tails. Next, I had to find a recipe for the sterling steaks which I used off of https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/14554/sirloin-steak-with-garlic-butter/.

  • 2 lobster tails
  • 4 red potatoes
  • pepper
  • 3 medium sized steaks
  • asparagus.
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Worcester sauce
  • Say sauce
  • Seasoning salt
  • Montreal steak spice

I will be posting the recipe and instructions with a picture by picture of what I did.

  1. My Mother’s Day meal included a lot of planning and preparation. In the afternoon after I got all the ingredients together, I started out by marinating the steaks for three hours putting barbeque sauce, Worchester sauce, soy sauce, seasoning salt, Montreal steak spice and pepper on beforehand.

  1. I then did the meal preparation where I boiled two small lobster tails for ten minutes in salt water. Next, I cooked the three steaks on high heat for five minutes per side.
  2. I then baked the red potatoes in the microwave for 10 minutes and steamed the asparagus for 7 minutes. And dessert is blueberry cheese crumble with vanilla light ice cream after supper.

Some things that I did not know before were first, how to properly buy lobster and steaks in the store. My dad helped me a lot with how to choose the appropriate size of the items and getting the right ones. I also did not realize that you have to marinate the steaks for such a long period of time.



Learning Post- Clam Pasta

This past weekend I made a good second meal called clam pasta. I researched different pasta meals and ended up stumbling upon this one off of https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/red-clam-sauce. Pasta is one of my favorite meal and I wanted to make one that had a good tasting sauce for taste. For the pasta meal, I made sure that I had all of the required ingredients.

The required ingredients included:

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cans (6-1/2 ounces each) chopped clams, undrained
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 6 ounces linguine, cooked and drained

Step 1: In a large bowl, I mixed the thyme, can of diced tomatoes, clams, basil leaves, parsley flakes, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and a tablespoon of Canola oil. After that, I started to cut a full onion and put it into the bowl.

Step 2: I turned the oven on to medium-high and I placed the pan on the hot plate. I had to cover and cook the sauce on low for 3 hours until it was heated. Here is a photo of what the pasta sauce looked like once it was boiled.







Step 3: Once the pasta sauce was boiled I started to boil the actual pasta which took around 10-15 minutes. During this time I made sure the top was on top of the pasta sauce to make sure it kept hot.

I have learned many new things during my journey of cooking and I am super glad that I am learning! I thought the meal went really well. I thought that leaving the top on the pan was a very good idea because it kept a lot of the taste inside. One thing I would try to do different would be to either cut up more of the clams or heat it for longer so that there aren’t as many big chunks of clam when I actually eat it! I was very glad I was able to make this successfully my first time! I have already learned a lot from being in the kitchen which is exciting!



Week 2- Learning Project Post

I have chosen Cooking for my learning project. I am very excited to be learning something that I have not had much training for. I have never had the opportunity to learn much about cooking. One of the main motives for learning how to cook was from https://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/ayeshas-home-kitchen

Being an athlete I have to take certain considerations for my diet in order to train and compete at high levels. My diet changed considerably once I came to University after I left home and I never learned how to cook good and delicious meals before I left.  I want to be able to cook many different meals by the time I come back to school and one of the main resources that I have found so far have been from https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/eat-athlete. Many of the meals on this website target individuals who work out a lot on a daily basis. It contains a bunch of healthy meals that are fairly short time wise.

The idea behind my desire to start cooking was to allow myself to be more comfortable with cooking my own meals. I also wanted to become more comfortable with accessing online recipes. There are some easier meals that you can find on many different online sites that are good when I am running short of time or when I am feeling lazy. I have always loved food and have always wanted to cook my own meals. I love the feeling of being in the kitchen and making different meals. Growing up my dad did all the cooking, however, I never really learned how to cook anything by myself. I have never been in the kitchen by myself so that was why I thought it would be a good learning experience for me. I have cooked very basic meals before such as; cereal, pancakes, grilled cheese, pasta and some other ones that don’t require much time or skill. My goal is to learn how to make more healthy and bigger meals so that I can able to challenge and add on to my existing knowledge in the kitchen.

I have divided my learning project into three different sections including; Pre-meal (ingredients), during, and after (the final product)
